Jenny Craig Facts: Debunking 5 Common Myths

The list of reasons for not losing weight can be a long one, such as being too busy to plan healthy meals, thinking the results won’t last or feeling too tired to work out. But just by reading this blog, you're already taking a step toward reaching your weight loss goals! We know how important it is to find support during this transformative time, and our team of consultants is here to help. Over the past 30-plus years, Jenny Craig members have received one-on-one support from dedicated consultations who teach portion control and healthy eating habits. So what's stopping you from taking the next step in your journey to reach your goal weight? Let's bust some common myths you might have heard about Jenny Craig. Myth #1: "The food is unhealthy." Jenny Craig Fact: At Jenny Craig, we primarily rely on freezing and shelf-stable technologies to maintain both the freshness and convenience of our portion-controlled foods. Nutrition is our priority, so our team of nutritionists and food technologists work together to make sure that our food is developed with strict specifications for regarding the amount of fat, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar as well as to emphasize the inclusion of vegetables, whole grain/fiber, protein, and heart healthy fats. We also encourage members to pair our meals with Fresh & Free Additions, such as non-starchy vegetables and fruits that are rich in fiber and water, so they help you stay satisfied while you’re on your plan. Myth #2: “The food is too sugary.” Jenny Craig Fact: Each day of our menu contains less than 10% of calories from added sugar. When following the meal plan, we can include a delicious dessert (i.e. Cinnamon Rolls, Cinnamon French Toast, Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Lava Cake) into the day as they are calculated into this daily average. We also seek to emphasize healthy ingredients, such as whole grains and healthy fats wherever possible in our meals and snacks. And we encourage drinking water and other non-caloric beverages, like tea or coffee without sugar, to help you stay hydrated without additional sugar. Myth #3: “The food is high in sodium.” Jenny Craig Fact: The prepackaged food menus have approximately 2300 mg of sodium per day, which reflects the USDA's Dietary Guidelines for Americans. You can also work with your consultant to reduce your sodium through lower sodium choices in the grocery foods you add to your Jenny Craig Menu every day. Myth #4: “The plan and food is too expensive.” Jenny Craig Fact: Going out to dinner or buying lunch every day adds up quickly! One meal alone can be about $15-$20, and just think about any additional snacks or your morning coffee run thrown into your budget. At Jenny Craig, we offer a variety of affordable weight loss plans to cater to your personal preferences. In fact, menu items start at $3.79 – a tremendous value when it comes to taste, balanced nutrition and support with weight loss. Myth #5: “Jenny Craig is not sustainable or long-lasting.” Jenny Craig Fact: Jenny Craig works! In fact, a 2014 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine ranked Jenny Craig as one of the top programs for physician referral, based on its high rate of weight loss at one year compared to control groups. Members on the Jenny Craig weight-loss program receive delicious food and a dedicated personal consultant to help them lose the weight. In addition, members are taught healthy eating tactics and strategies for maintaining weight loss. We also share helpful nutrition and eating tips to help members continue making smart eating choices now that they have the tools to recognize portion sizes. Kirstie Alley Chats with Harry Connick, Jr. on his Talk Show

Kirstie Alley recently chatted with Harry Connick, Jr. on his talk show Harry about keeping healthy with Jenny Craig, her dating life and being a new grandmother! Check out her interview and the amazing success stories of three other Jenny Craig members. “It’s just simple. I really needed a no brainer,” Jenny Craig spokesperson Kirstie Alley told Harry Connick, Jr. on a recent episode of his talk show, Harry. “The food is delicious. You really learn portions and everybody who does it gets a consultant.” Kirstie Alley, who had previously lost weight on the Jenny Craig program, came back to Jenny Craig as a spokesperson, because “the program works.” Kirstie is currently a member of the Jenny Craig maintenance program. “I’m on maintenance, so the program’s a little different,” explained Kirstie on the show. “I eat whatever I want to eat in the correct proportions, and then I have one meal of theirs a day.” Kirstie, who is recently a new grandmother, chatted with Harry about everything from dating to joking about being the perfect potential farmer’s wife. “I cook. I love animals. I love farm animals. I like land,” she said. “I go to bed really early. I’m a farmer’s wife.” The episode also featured the success stories of three women who lost weight on the Jenny Craig program: Nicole (lost 45lbs), Natalie (lost 45lbs) and Sloan (lost 60lbs). They discussed the positive results after losing weight with Jenny Craig, including increased energy, patience and happiness at home with their families. “I feel like I’m just a better version of myself,” explained Sloan, who lost a total of 60 pounds* while on Jenny Craig. “It’s great to see the family get involved–their habits changed.” Nicole, who credits her consultant for helping her stay on track, offered her advice, “Don’t be overwhelmed by whatever your number is. Take this one day at a time, and let your Jenny Craig consultant be your cheerleader. They are wonderful, and they are there for you.” *Results not typical. Members following our program, on average, lose 1-2 lbs per week. Sloane, Natalie and Nicole received promotional consideration.

6 Drinks You Can Say Yes To on Jenny Craig

Drinking enough water during the day—about half your bodyweight, in ounces—is one of the easiest and best ways to control hunger during your weight loss journey. But if you’re not in the habit of drinking this much liquid, you might find yourself struggling to meet your daily agua intake goals. Not to worry. Here are six simple alternatives to plain old water, along with ideas for making every sip a little more flavorful. 1. Get some sparkle
Whether you’re drinking mineral water, club soda or diet tonic water, bubbles make everything more fun! All three are sugar- and calorie-free, but club soda and diet tonic water both have sodium (50mg and 105mg, respectively), so it’s best not to make either of these a replacement for ALL of your daily fluids. Add a splash of fruit juice and pour your drink over ice, and it will feel more like a treat! 2. Drink your veggies
One serving of low-sodium vegetable juice contains the equivalent of one cup of vegetables, including 80% of your recommended daily Vitamin C intake and 700mg of potassium! All good stuff, and at just 30 calories per serving, it’s a wonderful way to curb hunger between meals. 3. Take a coffee break
Coffee certainly has its detractors, but as long as you’re staying out of frozen gourmet coffee territory, there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying the occasional cup of joe. These things should go without saying: if you like your coffee light and sweet, use a no-calorie sweetener and fat-free milk. And be aware that lack of sleep can disrupt your weight loss—so know when to choose decaf. 4. Take some tea
With less caffeine than coffee and varieties to suit every palate, tea is already a great addition to your daily fluid intake. But many studies suggest that the unique antioxidant compounds present in most kinds of tea carry with them a wide array of potential health benefits, too—including lowering “bad” cholesterol and helping to prevent diabetes. Note: steep longer for more health benefits. 5. Enjoy these sparingly
Craving a stronger burst of flavor? Try a diet soda, a sugar-free drink mix or one of the new “liquid water enhancer” products. Fair warning, though—many of these products contain sodium, and are sweetened with sucralose or similar artificial substances that can be up to 600 times sweeter than sugar. While they may not have calories, regular consumption can condition your taste buds to crave their concentrated sweetness… so over time, you might come to find other sweeteners less satisfying. 6. Hype up your H20
Who says your water has to be plain? Whether you’re drinking it still or sparkling, it’s easy to put a “mocktail” spin on your water. Fill a large pitcher with ice and water, toss in a few key ingredients, and let it steep in the fridge overnight for interesting sips throughout the next day. Here are just a few tasty ideas for you to try: cucumber and crushed mint, lemon and chopped basil, and slices of mixed citrus. Cheers!

How Jenny Craig Helps You Change Eating Behaviors

Why choose Jenny Craig? Because the menus are delicious and nutritious! We emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, heart-healthy fats, and low-fat dairy products while minimizing added sugars (less than 10 percent), refined carbohydrates, non-nutritive sweeteners, sodium, and saturated fat (less than 10 percent). Jenny Craig is also convenient, with prepared, portion-controlled meals and snacks throughout your day. But the real secret to weight-loss success with Jenny Craig lies in the eight ways in which the foods and menu help you change your behaviors for the better. 1. Gain control of your eating
Ever have one of those days when the afternoon arrives and you realize all you’ve consumed that day is a cup of coffee? A busy lifestyle can make for erratic eating. Having a planned menu and pre-portioned meals and snacks makes it easier to get into a healthy routine of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in-between to fuel your day all day long and keep you satisfied so you don’t succumb to the donuts in the office break room. 2. Maintain calorie consistency
If your goal is to lose weight, it can be helpful to count and track calories, which can be a lot of work. For foods or recipes that provide calories per serving, the task might be as simple as measuring the proper portion and then writing the calories consumed in your food journal. Now, let’s say your meal is a chicken breast, with a side of vegetables sautéed in a little olive oil, a salad, and a whole wheat roll. You need to weigh, measure, find the calorie content for each food, and add it all together. If you are also paying attention to quantities of carbs, fiber, protein, fat, sugar, and sodium, you need to research nutrient contents of foods and do that addition as well. Jenny Craig serves up exactly what you need when you need it throughout the day every day for optimal weight loss. 3. Overcome overeating
Are you a member of the clean-plate club? Someone who eats everything on the dish in front of you at every meal? That proclivity prevents waste but can put weight on your figure, if you regularly eat out at restaurants that serve over-sized meals. And then there are those foods that may be small in volume but big in calories. Nuts, for example, provide protein and healthy fats, and can be a nutritious snack or side, as long as you don’t eat too many. Just ¼ cup contains roughly 200 calories, so if you’re sitting next to a bowl of nuts while watching TV, you could easily consume 400, 800, or more calories by the time the credits roll. With the pre-portioned meals and snacks on the Jenny Craig menu, you won’t each too much or too little but just the right amount, and over time, as you follow the program, you will learn to eyeball healthy portions yourself. The start and stop signaling of a pre-portioned food is a very powerful part of the benefit. 4. Reduce stress
Just deciding what to prepare for dinner every night of the week can be a burden, especially when you have a family and a job outside the hope. Then there’s breakfast and lunch and snacks and examining healthy food options and composing meals with those healthy options. It takes a lot of mental (and physical—think of all that grocery shopping) energy. The Jenny Craig menus make these decisions easier by removing the temptation of less healthy choices, and entrees and snacks are delivered to your door so you don’t have to spend hours at the supermarket. Simplifying these two tasks makes your life easier and lowers stress levels, and less stress helps you achieve weight-loss success. 5. Indulge smartly in your favorite foods
Forbidding yourself from eating your favorite foods, whether pancakes, pasta, cookies, or cake can backfire if your cravings escalate uncontrolled. Jenny Craig doesn’t believe in deprivation. You’ll enjoy healthy and delicious versions of your favorite indulgences with built-in portion control. Chocolate walnut brownie anyone? 6. Retrain your palate
Jenny Craig creates meals with less sodium by replacing salt in recipes with a variety of herbs and spices. Through the Jenny Craig menus, you’ll explore new flavors and food. You’ll add a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables every day and you’ll discover the pleasures of these foods for a lifetime of healthy eating. 7. Stay focused on healthy choices
Throughout your week, temptation will call out to you: maybe the cookies your co-worker brought to the office, the billboard featuring a fat, juicy cheeseburger from the fast-food joint up the street, or the margaritas your friends are sipping at the neighborhood party. It can be a challenge at times to maintain your willpower. Having a pre-planned Jenny Craig menu to follow can keep your eyes focused on healthy foods and push lower- nutrient foods to the periphery. 8. Learn healthy eating habits for life
By following the Jenny Craig menus, you’ll get to know what eating pattern is best for weight maintenance and health. You’ll discover what’s delicious about fresh vegetables and fruits and how to unmask their flavors by cutting back on salt and sugar in recipes. You’ll see and feel what a healthy portion is whether you’re enjoying a salad or a scrumptious dessert. Jenny Craig helps you build healthy habits one meal at a time for a lifetime of healthy, sustainable eating.

Here are four of the most common questions we hear in our centers, along with our answers. Have a question not covered here? Ask your consultant. We’re always here for you. Will Jenny Craig work for me? As you know by now, there’s no magic pill for weight loss. We keep things simple and effective by supplying you with a delicious variety of food and providing guidance and support along the way. Independent research has shown that members following our program, on average, lose 1-2 lbs. per week. Our members lose 3X more weight than dieting on their own!* We’ll also support you to get more active, which has both health and weight maintenance benefits. We are here for every member through every step of the weight loss journey – no judgment. Does your food taste like diet food?
No! We have delicious foods ranging from Chocolate Lava Cake to Turkey Burgers and was ranked “Best Tasting Diet Food Programs” by NextAdvisor. We recognize that eating delicious food definitely makes the Jenny Craig plan more sustainable and enjoyable for you. That’s why we have more than 40 professional chefs who have a hand at crafting the entrees. Jenny Craig isn’t sustainable for weight loss. We wish all our members hit their goal and never put the weight back on, but life frequently gets in the way. Jenny Craig has research-proven strategies not just to lose the weight, but we’ll teach you many healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Weight loss is a journey, not a destination, we always want to be here to support anyone who wants to lose weight. Can I drink wine?
While it’s best to avoid alcohol to stay on track with your weight loss, your consultant can give you a range of options or alternatives to meet your needs. Does the food have a lot of sodium? Our planned menus have approximately 2200-2400mg of sodium per day. We use the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans that recommends reducing dietary sodium to 2300mg per day. If you have a reason to reduce sodium further than the recommendations, please work with your consultant to use the Personalized menu and select the foods lowest in sodium. Are there any new foods coming out?
We are always working on expanding our menu so our members have a wide variety of delicious foods to choose from. We currently have more than 100 delicious menu items. We always share this news via email or social media so please continue to follow us to stay updated on new foods! Can I do the program if I am breastfeeding?
Absolutely. Nursing mothers will be advised to follow a modified calorie level based on the child's age and frequency of breastfeeding. All breastfeeding mothers will need to wait until their baby is 6 weeks old to enroll. When you join or restart the program, your consultant will ensure that you are on an appropriate calorie level so that you and your baby receive the proper nutrition you both need during this special time. How can I be on the program when I have to cook for my family? This is also a common concern with new clients who haven’t yet realized how easy it is to follow a Jenny Craig weight loss program. Fact: most meals take about 5–10 minutes to prepare, including salads and free foods—so if you can give yourself those few extra minutes to prepare your meal along with the family meal, you’ll be in good shape. If hunger is a problem for you while cooking, try drinking 16 ounces of water and eating a small salad prior to preparing your family’s meal. Then you can eat your entrée with your family! Your consultant will teach you how to enjoy a meal on your own as well as visual portion cues and other Jenny Craig tricks, so you’ll be able to start enjoying the many family-friendly meals in our Online Recipe Library. Your family won’t even know they’re eating healthy! What happens after I reach my goal weight? First, you celebrate a job well done! Your consultant will help you transition to weight loss maintenance. Some clients choose to transition to a Jenny Craig maintenance menu, continuing to meet with their consultant and enjoy the ease of preparing Jenny Craig meals. Others choose to apply the principles they’ve learned during their weight loss journey—visual portion cues, carb and protein balances, free foods, and more—to self-prepared meals. When the time comes, talk with your consultant about which approach feels right for you. What happens if I reach a plateau? Although plateaus don’t happen to everyone, they’re common occurrences for anyone trying to lose weight—and your consultant has lots of strategies to help break through a weight loss plateau. Since a plateau can be caused by a number of factors. Your consultant will work closely with you to determine what might be causing your weight loss to stall. Then you’ll work together to adjust your menu or behaviors…and get you headed in the right direction. How can I make the program work within my tight budget? Discuss your budget limits with your consultant right away. This is a very common question, and there is absolutely no need to be embarrassed about it! Together, you and your consultant can create a customized menu that works for you. Not only will this approach help you save money during your weight loss journey, it will teach you how to eat healthy for life. *Rock CL, Flatt SW, Karanja N, et al.
