How Kristen M. Turned a Breakup Into the Motivation She Needed to Lose 133 lbs.*

Jenny Craig member Kristen M. is featured in PEOPLE magazine’s “How I Lost 100 Lbs.” article! She shares her incredible weight loss story, as told to PEOPLE:

After learning that her boyfriend of five years had cheated on her, Kristen M., a software specialist based in New York City, was distraught. In just three weeks she had to move out of their shared apartment, start a new job and find a new place to live. But the stressful time ended up being the catalyst she needed to focus on herself.

“I literally got rid of every excuse that I’ve ever had,” she tells PEOPLE. “I never had a better opportunity to just focus on myself and build myself back up.”

 

While Kristen grew up an athletic child, she became less active in college. Less activity coupled with emotional eating led to weight gain, and she reached her highest weight of 273 lbs. in 2014. While she initially lost 70 lbs.* when she first joined Jenny Craig, she put some of the weight back on when still in her toxic relationship.

She tells PEOPLE, “I had some guilt about losing the weight while he had school going on, and I wanted us to spend more time together. So I lost a bunch of weight but then slid back.”

 

But once the relationship was over, she was ready for a change. She returned to Jenny Craig in 2017, determined to lose 100 lbs. in just one year. She planned a trip to Cancun for exactly one year later – a way to keep herself accountable and reward herself for reaching her goal. With the help of Jenny Craig, Kristen was able to focus on her portion sizes, incorporate more vegetables at each meal and add activity back into her lifestyle. In February 2018, she reached her goal.

“I think I’m more myself now, funnily enough, than I ever was the previous 30 years,” she tells PEOPLE. “I say yes to things now, I’m more outgoing, I’m more likely to be social. I think weight loss isn’t just physical or mental — it’s a whole spectrum of your life.”
