After 20 Years, Kim S. Came Back to Jenny Craig and Lost 33 lbs.!*

After 20 years, Kim S. came back to Jenny Craig and loves her results! Kim is a mother, daughter, wife, working professional, full-time master’s student and self-proclaimed Jenny Craig believer. Two years ago, Kim found herself moving yet another set of too-small clothes to storage to make room for the next larger size. Although she tried to eat healthy and walk daily, she overindulged frequently, and knew her lifestyle could be healthier. So Kim returned to Jenny Craig and lost 33 lbs.!*


Here’s a peak at a typical day for Kim — find out the healthy habits she learned, and how she balances her busy schedule.

6:00 - 7:00 a.m. Breakfast and getting ready for work.

Jenny Craig gave me the tools to make my healthier lifestyle possible. I’m maintaining my weight on my own, while using what I’ve learned. Each day begins the night before, as I plan the meals and snacks around the activities for the coming day. 

My husband is the “alarm setter” in our house — not me. I am definitely an “early to bed, early to rise” type of person.

I get up, weigh myself, start a pot of decaf coffee, drink a glass of water, and begin the day. Breakfast is a bowl of whole-grain cereal with some fruit: Today, it’s strawberries with a cup of milk. Afterwards, I pack my lunch and snacks. 

I usually arrive early to work, so I park a few rows back. I get some extra steps in and take a small lap around a few buildings on campus, hopefully getting in around a thousand steps before my work begins.


Pro Tip: Before Jenny Craig, breakfast didn’t happen (or if it did, it was a doughnut). But now, a healthy breakfast is a necessity! It truly is the most important meal of the day. My pantry always has whole-grain cereal, bran flakes, and oatmeal in it. Fruit is always a part of my morning. I’ve found that a serving of berries has that sweetness that the doughnut of the past once fulfilled — and the berries don’t drop my energy level an hour later like the doughnut used to.

8:00 a.m. The work day begins. 

I have the pleasure of working with some wonderfully smart individuals and I’m able to help the next generation of nurses come through our doors. 

I have a stand-up desk and usually stand at least half the day, if not the whole day. When I first got the stand-up desk, I could only stand for an hour or so, but now, I can do most of the day without even realizing that I am standing.  

I keep a pair of good walking shoes in my cubicle as well as exercise clothes. I am truly ready for whatever the day holds!



Pro Tip: Every morning, my coworkers and I take our 20-ounce cups to the ice and water machine and fill up; we do a set of stairs in the process. This way, we’ll stay hydrated and squeeze in a little extra activity. I try to drink at least eight cups of water a day.

10:00 a.m. Time for a morning snack. 

My yogurt and half of a banana are my first snack of the day, and it’s one I don’t skip or delay. This keeps me from snacking on things like leftover cookies in the breakroom. When I have my snack, I do not feel as tempted by other goodies. 

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Exercising, then lunch!

potatoes green beans and pork chop on grillToday is gorgeous — a perfect spring day in Indiana. I walk for 45 minutes outdoors. I walk quickly, with purpose, as though I am late for a meeting. After my walk, I heat up my wonderful leftover dinner of 3-ounce pork chop, half cup of potatoes and green beans. After lunch, I refill my water cup and it is back to work.

Before rejoining Jenny Craig, walking was part of my routine, but it wasn’t enough to help me lose weight. I was walking 10,000 steps a day and eating salads to no avail

On one of my walks in the neighborhood, a neighbor asked, “When are you due?”

I knew I indulged; I was the go-to girl who would eat the last cupcake or cookie at the office pitch-ins. My coworker’s chocolate dish was a favorite stop every day. I would go overboard on carbohydrates — potatoes, pasta and especially bread! I knew I needed a change. 

I called Jenny Craig, rejoined the program and began to put the tools I learned into practice. My daily 10,000 steps now have purpose and salads are still present, but are now part of the day, not always the main meal.



Pro Tip: If you work in front of a computer screen all day — remember to back away, get up and move! I think a day filled with movement is essential. While we can do so much from a keyboard, it’s so important to get up from the chair, stand up, and walk around.    

2:00 p.m. Afternoon snack time.

taco chicken salad in tortilla bowlMy afternoon snack is some carrots with a serving of crackers and hummus. I have always liked salty things in afternoon and find that some veggies with a few crackers and hummus satisfy the salt craving without adding the fat of potato chips. 

4:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. After work, it’s time for dinner and Trivia Night!

Another productive day at work is done, and I drive to the other side of town to pick up my husband and my parents for Trivia Night and dinner. Once we arrive at the restaurant, I look over the menu. This used to be a difficult meal for me. 


Before Jenny Craig, I would have arrived hungry, but now, a healthy snack holds me over until dinnertime. When I follow what I’ve learned with Jenny Craig, I feel satisfied, thanks to the choices I have made throughout the day. 


For dinner, I choose a taco salad with chicken, which is one of my favorites! I ask for salsa instead of the dressing. The guacamole is my healthy fat serving remaining for the day. I order a sparkling water for my drink. We play trivia for two hours while having dinner and this evening we came in second place!



Pro Tip: When I was following the Jenny Craig program, I would eat my Jenny Craig dinner prior to going out and then have a side salad. Everyone needs to know that you can go out to dinner without ruining your weight loss or weight maintenance plan. Restaurants can and will accommodate, if there is nothing on the menu that you feel fits your needs, just ask! I have yet to find a place that won’t meet the challenge.

8:30 p.m. Finishing some schoolwork and relaxing at home. 

After a full day of work and spending time with friends and family, it’s time to wind down. I plan my menu for the next day and have some raisins with another glass of water. 

My summer course began today and I have some reading to finish! Before Jenny Craig, I would have gone straight to bed after Trivia Night. The change in my lifestyle has given me the energy to actually do something in the evenings besides watch television and go to bed. It is no coincidence I started the master’s program one month after rejoining Jenny Craig. That first month gave me the confidence to tackle this dream. 

Jenny Craig has helped me — and in more ways than just losing over 30 pounds.* I’ve changed my outlook on food. I love vegetables! My consultant, Norma, was instrumental to my success: She was my cheerleader, my gentle prodder, and a welcome weekly call. I miss her! 

Does really good bread still sing to me? You bet. But I no longer help clean up by eating the leftover desserts; I box them up for others! My favorite outfits from storage are back in my closet. I have energy. Instead of falling asleep on the sofa in the evenings, I am in class, studying, or on a walk with my husband. 

I have learned that many people would like to lose weight, get fit and feel better. But it takes vigilance and self-discipline to go to work or school, to take care of ourselves and our families. I truly believe we all can be the people we want to be. It just takes the correct tools, a bit of time, and tenacity.
