Here's How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolution Without Feeling Discouraged

“New year, new you” is a phrase that becomes very popular around the beginning of January — everyone seems to be making resolutions to improve their health, fitness and happiness. And while you may be sticking with a resolution or two, new data predicts most people give up on their goals by January 18.1 The aptly-named “Quitters’ Day” has a silver lining – it’s five days later than the date anticipated last year. Use it as a benchmark — once you’ve reached January 19, you’ve made it past the hardest point!

Now is an excellent time to recommit to the goals you made earlier in the year and give yourself a pat on the back for all the progress you’ve made so far! Writing down your goals may make you 42 percent more likely to complete them, based on one study.2 It’s easy to think about your resolution, but writing it down and displaying it in a place you’ll see it every day is a great way to remind yourself of what you want to achieve.

Change your mindset.

If your resolution is to go exercise four times a week, and you were only able to work up a sweat three times this week, that’s OK! Don’t let negative thoughts get in the way. Take a moment to appreciate your effort and give yourself kudos. Aim to exercise four times next week to keep your goal in sight.

Having a specific resolution, like saving a certain amount of money per month or hitting your goal weight, deserves a celebration! Think of some non-food rewards – these seven ideas are some of our favorites. When you hit a milestone, celebrate!

Sleep more.

If you’re busy juggling work, spending time with family and friends, hitting the gym, and making healthy meals, you might be in need of a good night’s sleep. Resolutions are about commitment, and when you don’t get enough sleep, impulse has a more likely chance to take the wheel – a recent study suggests that a lack of sleep might make you more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks.3

If you and a friend or family member have similar resolutions, check in on each other. Ask about their progress via a text message or call, or plan activities together – working out with a friend has five benefits that might surprise you!
