After escaping the wedding early, I was plagued with the realization that these feelings were becoming way too routine. As I thought back on other events that should have been happy and fun, the thing I most remember is how uncomfortable I felt in my own skin. 


My weight gain was gradual. I was always active as a competitive figure skater until my early 20s. I never worried about what or how much I ate since I was so active. As I transitioned into the “adult world” of working as a nurse and living on my own, my unhealthy eating habits started to catch up with me. Finding physical activity that I thoroughly enjoyed as an adult was difficult. Without the competition, it was hard to stay motivated. I also realized that my coping mechanism for any stressful, sad or happy event was to eat. All these factors contributed to the rising number on the scale.

Since losing weight, I say yes to many things! The most important thing is saying yes to myself and making my needs a priority. I am saying yes to social events. I am proud of what I have accomplished and no longer feel like hiding. I am saying yes to physical activity. I have learned that I get bored very easily with the same activity. I joined a gym and like to swim laps, do yoga, weightlift, and run. I can mix it up based on my mood! Finally, I am saying yes to new goals. I have the confidence to reach for more now, maybe a 5K, or maybe putting those skates back on!
