A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine1 recognized Jenny Craig as a potential treatment against obesity through its weight loss and weight management program. Further, the study "Mechanisms, Pathophysiology, and Management of Obesity" underscores the key elements of treating obesity which include live counseling, a low-calorie diet, physical activity and behavior modification – all of which are fundamental elements of the Jenny Craig program. Obesity is a leading cause of chronic diseases.
Within the study, researchers Dr. Heymsfield and Dr. Wadden provide a thorough review of the causes, health consequences and treatment of obesity. Their review underscores the complexity of the condition and the challenge its epidemic proportions present to the healthcare system.
"We are gratified that Jenny Craig was specifically named as a commercial program for physician referral. The study is further validation of the importance of regular contact with a trained counselor to provide behavioral strategies, set goals and engage in problem solving for both weight loss and weight maintenance. All of these are key components of our one-on-one personalized approach," said Monty Sharma, CEO of Jenny Craig.
In particular, the study references that a commercial weight loss program, such as Jenny Craig, can be prescribed by physicians if the program's safety and efficacy have been reported in peer-reviewed journals as is the case with Jenny Craig. According to obesity researcher and Jenny Craig Science Advisor Frank Greenway, MD, "Most physicians recognize obesity as a chronic disease. They recommend diet and exercise for weight management, but need referral resources to support their patients to succeed. The highly respected New England Journal of Medicine recommends that referrals be made to weight loss programs that have evidence of safe and effective weight loss published in high-quality medical journals. Only two programs were mentioned as fulfilling that criteria and Jenny Craig was one of those."

Since 1983, Jenny Craig has changed lives around the world. The company was built on the belief that successful weight loss and weight management can be achieved through a supportive consultant and healthy and delicious food. Mrs. Jenny Craig co-founded the company 34 years ago with her late husband, Sid Craig.
Mrs. Craig began to realize the need for weight loss services after the birth of her first child when she found she had gained weight. Through her own combination of diet and exercise, she shed the baby weight, but found there weren't enough options for people who wanted to lose weight in a supportive environment. Mrs. Craig had worked at a local gym where she developed an interest in weight loss and nutrition. This interest eventually led to the opening of her own gym, and then in 1983, her first Jenny Craig Weight Loss Center. Mrs. Craig took what she learned through her own weight loss journey and years of working in the weight loss industry to create a comprehensive approach to weight loss.
Today, there are more than 500 locations in North America and the Jenny Craig brand continues to help people reach their weight loss goal. In fact, an independent study in Annals of Internal Medicine* ranked Jenny Craig as one of the most effective weight loss programs due to the fact it resulted in greater weight loss at 12 months than those assigned to control groups. Additionally, Jenny Craig has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the Best Weight Loss Diet Plans for the seventh year in a row, as well as a top diet for Fast Weight Loss and Easy Weight Loss.

Let's bust some common myths you might have heard about Jenny Craig.
Myth #1: "The food is unhealthy."
Jenny Craig Fact: At Jenny Craig, we primarily rely on freezing and shelf-stable technologies to maintain both the freshness and convenience of our portion-controlled foods. Nutrition is our priority, so our team of nutritionists and food technologists work together to make sure that our food is developed with strict specifications for regarding the amount of fat, saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar as well as to emphasize the inclusion of vegetables, whole grain/fiber, protein, and heart healthy fats. We also encourage members to pair our meals with Fresh & Free Additions, such as non-starchy vegetables and fruits that are rich in fiber and water, so they help you stay satisfied while you’re on your plan.
Myth #2: “The food is too sugary.”
Jenny Craig Fact: Each day of our menu contains less than 10% of calories from added sugar. When following the meal plan, we can include a delicious dessert (i.e. Cinnamon Rolls, Cinnamon French Toast, Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Lava Cake) into the day as they are calculated into this daily average. We also seek to emphasize healthy ingredients, such as whole grains and healthy fats wherever possible in our meals and snacks. And we encourage drinking water and other non-caloric beverages, like tea or coffee without sugar, to help you stay hydrated without additional sugar.
Myth #3: “The food is high in sodium.”
Jenny Craig Fact: The prepackaged food menus have approximately 2300 mg of sodium per day, which reflects the USDA's Dietary Guidelines for Americans. You can also work with your consultant to reduce your sodium through lower sodium choices in the grocery foods you add to your Jenny Craig Menu every day.
Myth #4: “The plan and food is too expensive.”
Jenny Craig Fact: Going out to dinner or buying lunch every day adds up quickly! One meal alone can be about $15-$20, and just think about any additional snacks or your morning coffee run thrown into your budget. At Jenny Craig, we offer a variety of affordable weight loss plans to cater to your personal preferences. In fact, menu items start at $3.79 – a tremendous value when it comes to taste, balanced nutrition and support with weight loss.
Myth #5: “Jenny Craig is not sustainable or long-lasting.”
Jenny Craig Fact: Jenny Craig works! In fact, a 2014 study in the Annals of Internal Medicine ranked Jenny Craig as one of the top programs for physician referral, based on its high rate of weight loss at one year compared to control groups.

Kirstie Alley recently chatted with Harry Connick, Jr. on his talk show Harry about keeping healthy with Jenny Craig, her dating life and being a new grandmother! Check out her interview and the amazing success stories of three other Jenny Craig members.
“It’s just simple. I really needed a no brainer,” Jenny Craig spokesperson Kirstie Alley told Harry Connick, Jr. on a recent episode of his talk show, Harry. “The food is delicious. You really learn portions and everybody who does it gets a consultant.”
Kirstie Alley, who had previously lost weight on the Jenny Craig program, came back to Jenny Craig as a spokesperson, because “the program works.” Kirstie is currently a member of the Jenny Craig maintenance program. “I’m on maintenance, so the program’s a little different,” explained Kirstie on the show. “I eat whatever I want to eat in the correct proportions, and then I have one meal of theirs a day.”
Kirstie, who is recently a new grandmother, chatted with Harry about everything from dating to joking about being the perfect potential farmer’s wife. “I cook. I love animals. I love farm animals. I like land,” she said. “I go to bed really early. I’m a farmer’s wife.”
The episode also featured the success stories of three women who lost weight on the Jenny Craig program: Nicole (lost 45lbs), Natalie (lost 45lbs) and Sloan (lost 60lbs). They discussed the positive results after losing weight with Jenny Craig, including increased energy, patience and happiness at home with their families.
“I feel like I’m just a better version of myself,” explained Sloan, who lost a total of 60 pounds* while on Jenny Craig. “It’s great to see the family get involved–their habits changed.”
Nicole, who credits her consultant for helping her stay on track, offered her advice, “Don’t be overwhelmed by whatever your number is. Take this one day at a time, and let your Jenny Craig consultant be your cheerleader. They are wonderful, and they are there for you.”
*Results not typical. Members following our program, on average, lose 1-2 lbs per week. Sloane, Natalie and Nicole received promotional consideration.
Drinking enough water during the day—about half your bodyweight, in ounces—is one of the easiest and best ways to control hunger during your weight loss journey. But if you’re not in the habit of drinking this much liquid, you might find yourself struggling to meet your daily agua intake goals. Not to worry. Here are six simple alternatives to plain old water, along with ideas for making every sip a little more flavorful.
1. Get some sparkle
Whether you’re drinking mineral water, club soda or diet tonic water, bubbles make everything more fun! All three are sugar- and calorie-free, but club soda and diet tonic water both have sodium (50mg and 105mg, respectively), so it’s best not to make either of these a replacement for ALL of your daily fluids. Add a splash of fruit juice and pour your drink over ice, and it will feel more like a treat!
2. Drink your veggies
One serving of low-sodium vegetable juice contains the equivalent of one cup of vegetables, including 80% of your recommended daily Vitamin C intake and 700mg of potassium! All good stuff, and at just 30 calories per serving, it’s a wonderful way to curb hunger between meals.
3. Take a coffee break
Coffee certainly has its detractors, but as long as you’re staying out of frozen gourmet coffee territory, there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying the occasional cup of joe. These things should go without saying: if you like your coffee light and sweet, use a no-calorie sweetener and fat-free milk. And be aware that lack of sleep can disrupt your weight loss—so know when to choose decaf.
4. Take some tea
With less caffeine than coffee and varieties to suit every palate, tea is already a great addition to your daily fluid intake. But many studies suggest that the unique antioxidant compounds present in most kinds of tea carry with them a wide array of potential health benefits, too—including lowering “bad” cholesterol and helping to prevent diabetes. Note: steep longer for more health benefits.
5. Enjoy these sparingly
Craving a stronger burst of flavor? Try a diet soda, a sugar-free drink mix or one of the new “liquid water enhancer” products. Fair warning, though—many of these products contain sodium, and are sweetened with sucralose or similar artificial substances that can be up to 600 times sweeter than sugar. While they may not have calories, regular consumption can condition your taste buds to crave their concentrated sweetness… so over time, you might come to find other sweeteners less satisfying.
6. Hype up your H20
Who says your water has to be plain? Whether you’re drinking it still or sparkling, it’s easy to put a “mocktail” spin on your water. Fill a large pitcher with ice and water, toss in a few key ingredients, and let it steep in the fridge overnight for interesting sips throughout the next day. Here are just a few tasty ideas for you to try: cucumber and crushed mint, lemon and chopped basil, and slices of mixed citrus. Cheers!
