7 Healthy Alternatives to Coffee

You may hear a typical morning routine begin with waking up, getting dressed for the day and then heading out for a big cup of coffee. Many times, coffee drinkers opt for the larger cups with added flavors, like vanilla, hazelnut or chocolate, which can hinder weight loss due to the added sugar and calories. Sometimes, the coffee may seem so filling on its own, people may skip eating breakfast to focus on other things!

While we don't encourage drinking coffee with sugar, Jenny Craig members may drink coffee with a splash of fat-free or non-dairy milk to make it more palatable. If you’ve been relying too much on coffee or want to avoid the possible afternoon caffeine crash, here are five alternatives to coffee in the morning to give you an energy boost:

Get adequate sleep

This is obvious, and can affect your health and weight loss. A good night’s rest can lead toward a good morning. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Getting a full night’s sleep can serve as a great alternative to coffee, giving you the same energy without the need for caffeine.

Create a new morning routine

A morning ritual that allows you to ease into your day can be an added perk like your coffee. If you wake up early you have time to check the news, read a book and/or explore lots of new options you wouldn’t normally have time to do.

Drink tea

Tea is delicious and can be an excellent coffee substitute with less caffeine. Many teas are naturally flavored via the leaves, fruits and/or berries. Black tea, white tea and green tea take about 3-5 minutes to steep depending on the variety, and have less caffeine than coffee. In addition, some tea beverages contain antioxidants associated with health benefits. Decaf, iced or herbal, the options are numerous to explore.

Lemon Water

Not a fan of tea? Another coffee alternative is warm lemon water. While this may not give you the boost that coffee does, it is quite soothing and has some benefits. Warm water with lemon may aid digestion, helps you stay hydrated, and gives you some Vitamin C and potassium at the same time. The next time you are thinking coffee, try warm or hot water with lemon instead for a change of your morning routine.

Stretch

Start your morning off with an invigorating stretching session. It will not only wake up your body, but stretching has also been associated with improved circulation, stress relief and increased flexibility. Just a few minutes of stretching every morning may be enough to help you gain those benefits.

Eat breakfast

Skipping breakfast is an unfortunate choice for some people to save calories. Don’t follow suit. Eating breakfast provides the nutrients that will help jumpstart your day and keep you focused with enough energy for your morning. Take a walk
