Hi - I'm a newly returning JC-er and want to really do the program right this time; not just lose weight but understand how to eat healthily once the weight is gone. I also do a fair amount of personalizing because I don't eat red meat or poultry so my JC options become pretty limiting. In reading through my handouts, I've found the following inconsistencies for a 1200 calorie diet:
JC's Pocket Guide to the Volumetrics vs. Personalized Menu Planner lists:
1 meat 1 meat
2 starch 1 starch
1 Milk 1 Milk
1 Fat 1 Fruit

2 Meat 2 Meat
2 Starch 1 Starch
1 Veg 1 Veg
1 Fat 1 Fat

4 Meat 3 Meat
2 Starch 2 Starch
1 Veg 2 Veg
1 Fat 1 Fat

So, it looks like 7 meat vs 6 meat exchanges, 6 starch vs 4 starch exchanges and 3 Fat vs 2 Fat exchanges. I also note that fruit is completely missing from the first but assume that is an "understood" item? Still 2 Fruit per day, yes? And also 2 Dairy exchanges per day?

Also, regarding calories, if I am on the 1200 cal diet and add up 3 JC meal calories plus 2 Dairys, 2 Fruits and a Snack, I'm very close (sometimes over!) to the 1200 number. So, if I actually count the calories in the unlimited frees because things like "good veggies" still have them - carrots, tomatoes, beets etc and if I eat my fat exchanges instead of skipping them (which I've done in the past), I end up OVER 1200 - is that expected though? Does 1200 mean 1200 menu item calories?

Thank you very much!!

Thank you for your post,

The Food Groups for MOMO have changed to better reflect what an actual MOMO would likely be, and also to be more consistent with our other printed materials and menus.

The correct information is:
  • Breakfast: 1 Meat, 1 Starch, 1 Fruit, 1 Milk
  • Lunch: 2 Meat, 1 Starch, 1 Vegetable, 1 Fat
  • Dinner: 3 Meat, 2 Starch, 2 Vegetable, 1 Fat
If you are doing more than one meal a day on your own you should follow the Day On My Own (DOMO) exchanges.
  • 1200 calories DOMO: 5 Starches, 3+ Vegetables, 2 Fruits, 6 Meats, 2 Milks, 3 Fats
Best Wishes!
