:( Hi everyone. I had surgery on 1/17/2012 on my shoulder. The pain is horrible. Thanks goodness he gave me vicodin. The problem is that between the pain and the medication (mostly the pain) I can't exercise and I weighed myself and gained .4lbs. I'm not happy because I followed the plan and didn't sway from it. I guess just sitting around can cause this. I'm trying to lose 35 lbs and I went from 220 to 207.6 and I started at the beginning of December so I don't lose weight very fast as it is. I'm just so stressed. Any ideas from anyone that have been through would be great. Thanks I love these forums. Tina

Ok, first of all this may not be real weight gain, but fluid retention. Most surgical procedures require you get IV fluid during, and the meds you are on may also be afffecting this. Just stick to the food plan, make sure you are drinking your water. The pain will improve. As far as exercising, just remember the longer you stay down, the harder it can be to get back up. Just getting up and walking is very important after any surgical procedure. (they had my mother out of bed just hours after her hip replacement). You dont have to do anything vigorously, but just try to make an effort at least every hour to get up and walk 5-10 minutes, even if it just around the house or walking in place. It's the ultimate catch-22, the pain makes you not want to do anything, but some regular light activity will actuall help the recovery process.

I couldn't agree more with Mo!

I had a torn rotator cuff (mine was so bad it was a horrible operation and probably my fault I let it go so long) so I understand the pain. But you DO have to get moving. Even walking will help. It will help you heal, it will help you lose fluids, it will help you in so many ways.

And step away from the stupid scale! SERIOUSLY!!!

There are times where your priority has to shift SLIGHTLY and in your case, while eating right is important, taking care of yourself and healing your shoulder is much more important. And as much as I don't want to scare you, physical therapy is going to bring more pain INITIALLY. However, it's going to help you heal and now I can do things that I couldn't do for YEARS before the surgery. So was it fun going through it? H*ll no. Am I glad I did it now? Absolutely!!!!

You likely don't have a "gain" and when you start weighing yourself in OUNCES you're really "out of control." So, hon, PLEASE for yourself, your health and your overall healing, focus more on moving and getting yourself up and around and less on the scale.

Medications, IVs, and just healing can (and likely will) cause a TEMPORARY gain but it's not a TRUE gain.

So focus on the things that you can deal with now and that's getting your arm and shoulder better. Eat the way you're supposed to and don't focus on the stupid scale. It's only going to depress you and you already have enough things on your mental "plate" so to speak. Because, guess what, stress will also cause a "gain" when your body releases cortisol and all of these have nothing to do with a real gain.

BTW, four ounces? Are you in a sling? That ALONE will cause a four ounce gain!

Just feel better. Heal. And remember what you're doing on JC is going to have to be done for a lifetime (portion control and overall moderation) so IF, IF, IF it takes a few extra weeks to lose the weight and get to goal, so be it. It doesn't mean your'e going backwards or you won't get there.

You've done sooooooooo well so far and you will continue to do better...as soon as you and your shoulder are healed and you're able to exercise more strenously.

Sending hug with BOTH arms - which I couldn't do before the surgery. :)

I agree with Amy......the surgery and meds are the culprit here. Pain meds cause fluid retention BIGtime!!! I agree also that getting up ever so often will help. I know all you want to do is lay around, but really try to move a little bit. I wouldnt exercise by any means.....give yourself time to heal but being somewhat mobile will fight the weight gain and keep your blood flowing so you wont get a bloodclot...but thats a whole nother subject. lol

I hope you start feeling better girl, and before you know it you will be up and losing again. ;)
