Hi everybody,

I just got back to JC 2 weeks ago after being away for about a year. I am a lifetime member and although I haven't been at my goal weight since 2002, I stay healthy and continue to exercize. I've been about 10-12 lbs. over my desired weight for 10 years now, and gained the customary additional 5 over the holidays, so I am back and this time I'm ready to get down where I really want to be. It's hard because I hit a lot of plateaus... I exercize a lot so I'm quite sure some of this weight is mucle . Also I wonder sometimes if I'm eating enough calories so I'll have to talk to my consultant about that, but the reason for my post today, aside from to say hello to everybody, is to ask about bloat. Whenever I come back on Jenny, the increase in fruits and vegetables leaves me so bloated and uncomfortable. My body eventually adjusts, but this time it seems to be taking longer. The air just rumbles around inside of me and I feel like a beached whale. It makes it difficult to exercize and even to sleep. Has anybody had this problem, and if so any advice on getting through it?

Thanks all and here's to a great 2012!!

Welcome back and congrats on making the decision to return before things got too out of control.

As for the bloating, do you eat the Anytime bars? Lots of folks have problems with them. Also, there's an item in many of the JC foods - inulin (sp?) - that also causes some folks problems. It might not be the extra fiber from the fruits and veggies after all.

The other thing to help counteract that is water and, for me, it was also taking a GasX before meals. That helped A LOT!

We're glad you're here. Please post more often and let us know how things are going. It's a great group of folks and we'd all love to support you to reach your goal this time and stay there. :)

Welcome back JGSNYC!

Glad you decided to return and address you weight issues.

Along with the Anytime Bars that can def cause gas/bloating, inulin is a fiber that is naturally in fruits and veggies....so yes, you are probably having bloating issues due to eating MORE of those. Here is a list of some of the foods that also contain inulin that you may want to avoid:

Apple Cinn. Waffles
Banana Nut Mini Loaf
Beef & Cheese Slider
Blueberry Mini Loaf
Chicken Florentine Lasagna
Chocolate Cakes
Clam Chowder
Lemon Cakes

Mixed Berry Bar
Oatmeal Raisin Anytime Bar
Orange Chicken
Peanut Butter Chocolate Anytime Bar
Philly Cheese Steak Panini
Three Cheese Ziti Marinara
Vanilla Chocolate Crisp Anytime Bar
Yogurt Dream Bar

Huh. Thanks Melissa, I've had at least one of the things on that list in each of the past 5 days! I've never heard of inulin, I am going to do a little research. Thanks also for the words of encouragement and the warm welcome back. Phyllis we are at similar points in our journey -- my returning weight was 148 my goal is 130. According to the Bodymedia site, I'll be there by March 9. Seems like a loooooong time but I'll get there. Thanks again for the support.

Melissa, thanks those articles are great. I am happy to know it is a natural plant byproduct and not something manufactured. If it is helping do all those things for me, I will suffer a little bloat. It's amazing to me when something sounds so positive and yet you still have the naysayers that have to put their 2 cents in about it causing this and that. As long as it's natural, I'm there. Thanks again! Jeannie

Jeannie, just because something is "natural" it doesn't mean that it can't cause problems. Hemlock is natural, lol, and look what it did to Socrates. :o
Inulin is not without its possible side effects, especially if one is sensitive to it. I happen to be sensitive to it and suffered from bloating, cramps, and other gastrointestinal issues. I was really at a loss to explain the symptoms until I saw a post on this forum about inulin and realized that I had flare-ups whenever I ate JC foods containing inulin. Once I started to avoid foods that contained inulin my symptoms disappeared competely.
Here's another article:

You might want to try avoiding inulin for a while and see if it makes a difference for you. It might not make any difference at all but maybe....

Im into my third week, and have really been pushing the water comsumption, and that helps with the bloat/gas, trying to get in my 64 oz or about 8 oz every hour x 8 hours. It helps keep me full on the days I have hunger pains.

I have the same problem and I have found that if I take a "Beano" prior to eating it prevents the bloating/ gas. Eventually I am hoping my body will just adjust to all the added fiber and it won't bother me as much. (fingers crossed!). Good luck!

Thanks soooo much for sharing the list of JC foods that contain inulin MeLissa! The bloating and gas are definitely embarrassing but I'm not willing to give up my apple cinnamon waffles, yougurt dream bars, blueberry mini loafs or chocolate cakes for NObody!! I'll just pop some Gas-X and down those extra cups of water. Thank you so much, you posts are always helpful!

Hi all :) I'm returning too and happy to be back on track :) I'm replying to this post because I had an AWFUL time with gas when I returned to Jenny last year after being away and doing really well on my own. I had NEVER had any problems in the past on Jenny so I figured something must have changed and I didn't think it was me! My center wasn't helpful so I turned to these boards and, thankfully, found other people discussing the problem and the reason - inulin! I started avoiding the foods with inulin (I am a veggie and salad lover and ate "volumetrically waaaay back before Jenny even thought of the word so the last thing I need is added deconstructed fiber). It helped but as I'm also a vegetarian, it was hard to find enough variety! Thankfully, when I returned this time, I found that Jenny had reconfigured some recipes so that I have more options. That's the good news :)! Still, what totally surprises me is the lack of knowledge at my center. The person who restarted me is a lovely woman but she had no idea what I was talking about when I brought up the inulin issue. She said she'd speak to corporate and get back to me. Which she did. 4 days into the diet! And after I'd tried bought a box of Anytime bars which I now can't eat and they won't take back! But I digress. The crazy thing is that I was assigned to a counselor for my second visit who, when I asked about the amount of inulin in menu options, looked confused, checked my file and then replied "oh yes I see you have an insulin (inSulin!!) issue. So, I set about educating her too. Honestly, if this were nut or shellfish allergies...well, I understand there's a difference but enough of us have brought this to their attention that ALL center personnel should be aware, yes?
