Does anyone know if there are going to be any discounts for the New Year for joining?

There are always some type of special going on. Why don't you call the 1-800-597-5366 or call your local JC center to meet with someone. There are several programs to choose from and they will be able to tell you which will be the best for your situation and also if there are any upcoming specials. And, yes, they will share that info with you about upcoming discounts.

I joined on 12/31 and there were absolutely no specials except for a $40 discount on the $399 annual membership. So I had to do the $30 for 28 days which will certainly start to add up. My Dad joined in Sept and got 50% off his membership. It really bothered me that there were no new year's discounts.
