Hey Everyone out there in Cyber land!

I went in to WI today and I had gained .4. This is unusual for me since I've been losing something each week since re-joining 9 weeks ago.
But today, right before going into my JC center, I got my period.
My JCC said I probably didn't lose, and gained the .4 because of it. Any of you agree/disagree? Would love some insight and opinions on this topic.

I know the numbers don't mean a thing. But to me, they really do. It's my motivation, my drive, and it works for me.

The rest of the day hasn't been good at all. Replaced lunch with 1 cup of homemade butternut squash soup (without cream), and a handful of walnuts. Then while at Whole Foods bought a vegan chocolate chip cookie.

Got to wash this day away and start fresh tomorrow!

But would still love some opinions about if what my JCC said is true or not. Whatcha think?

Hi Amy, she is absolutely correct! I gain around 2-5 lbs sometimes before/during TOM......and MANY here say the same, so no worries...you will lose that by your next weight in ;) .....like you said, make a fresh start tomorrow!!!

Amy,

I'm past menopause so, no, I don't have the "time of the month" anymore but gaining weight before and during your period is VERY common. But that's not what "concerns" me.

You made a couple of statements that are "disturbing."

First, if you have a gain, you can't let it throw you. Gains can be from so many things that aren't real gains. Yes, of course, your time of the month, but also a change of medications, sodium retention, wearing different clothes, etc. But if you let that sort of thing throw you, you're setting yourself up for a disappointment.

You said you've been doing well so far and that's great. But it's possible - ONLY POSSIBLE - that you may have another week or two on your journey where you don't show a loss or even a slight gain. As long as you know you've stuck to the plan, then you can't let it deter you, depress you or make you feel as if there's a problem.

Remember, this isn't just a diet but a new way of looking at food for the rest of your life so you have to expect that it's not going to be a straight line down. Yes, that happens for some people but not for the vast majority of us.

The other thing you said - almost casually - was that you had a handful of walnuts and a vegan chocolate chip cookie. Do you realize that those two things were a couple of hundred extra calories?

You chose to replace your lunch with the soup, nuts and a cookie. Yes, we all have slips but what caused that one? Was it because of the small gain from your time of month?

See, if you let things like temporary "gains" - when they're not really true gains - then you're only hurting yourself. It's the type of behavior that brought many of us here to Jenny to begin with because we "comforted" ourselves with food.

It's good that you are going to start over tomorrow, but it's also important that you don't forget this slip - not in the sense that you should feel bad about it (we all slip) but in the sense that you should remember what led up to the slip so that you can see the warning signs and not repeat it.

It's not the slips that tell us how successful we'll be at this but rather how quickly you get up again, see what you "slipped" on, and make sure you take a different path so at least you don't "trip" over the same spot in the future. :)

I think you're doing great. I just want you to be easier on yourself so you can continue to lose in a healthy and long-term way. :)

:) Hi AmyMiami,

I have one question for you...before doing the program would you have gained weight during your time of the month? Look back on your own body patterns and that should give you some indication of whether your JC consultants comments were on track. Also please remember that weight loss is not predictable and there will be weeks when no weight is lost. You may do everything "perfectly" and not see any results. Its annoying but our bodies have a mind of their own. Come up with some Non Scale Victories or NSVs to give you motivation for those non weight loss weeks.

I suspect that your time of month had some affect on your food choices and that is why you went off plan. At your next appointment discuss the topic with your JC consultant and ask for suggestions on NSVs or other tactics to stop you from going off program.

As for me, I am in a perimenopause state and my time of month can be quite dramatic. I retain water and my hormones jump around resulting in some very odd mood swings. Then other times I am fairly normal and my time of month is just a little blip on the screen.

Try not to worry about the scale and focus on developing good & healthy life style habits that support you and build you up.

Take care and I hope that you have a better week. :)

Awesome post PL!!!

Question: How do you know for sure you are in perimenopause, and how old are you? Maybe we should take this to a pm. lol

Hi Ladies,

Thank you for taking notice to my post, and for your responses. However, I'm a little disturbed by the unsupportive nature of your replies.

Needless to say that I forgot to mention that I have lost 50lbs on JC to date, and that I have contributed much of my success to the support I've gained on these message boards. However, I currently don't feel supported, and feel rather "knocked-down" at a time when I could really use some lifting up.

I appreicate your concerns, and know you all mean very well, and I thank you for that.

But from time to time we are going to make mistakes, especially as we gradually learn a new way of handling our eating habits and making changes. However, I believe strongly in going slow. I have found, for myself at least that change that happens too quickly, and doesn't have any time to learn from ones mistakes is change that might not last.

For me, in the past, there will be times when I resort to old eating habits, emotionally eat, make poor choices, whatever it might be. But in the context of the situation, it makes sense for me. Was it the best decision to have a cookie yesterday given all the money I spend on JC let alone all the calories that were in it? No. But do I know that when I start my TOM and have disturbing news that it's likely that I make a poor food choice? Yes. I usually plan so that sort of thing doesn't happen, but this once time I wasn't prepared.

I'm not trying to justify, just clarify why I'm not feeling very supported.

Finally, I do have non-food related motivators for myself. It has always worked for me, and I continue to utilize that trick with my weight loss. I get a manicure every 10lbs I lose, buy myself something nice under $10, or even go for a nice long walk as a gift to myself for continuing and being successful on JC.

I lost 55lbs 2 years ago on JC from 215lbs-160lbs I returned weighting 174lbs and am currently at 163lbs. I think I'm doing something right.

Amy,

I'm sorry if you felt our (my?) post was not "supportive." It certainly wasn't meant to be judgmental but rather to be a suggestion that you might want to be more introspective about "slips" so that they can be avoided or at least recognized as a "danger zone" in the future.

Progress, not perfection. :)

In truth, the only question you asked was if we thought that your TOM could cause a gain. Apparently I took my post further than you wanted and I apologize.

Please know that I am trying to be supportive and I might not always say things in the way that they were meant. From now on, I'll do my best to "stick with the facts, maam, just the facts" - or, more to the point, just the question asked and not editorialize.

This is your journey and you need to take it however is best for you. If there's some specific way that you need something from us "sending hugs," "tell me I'm going to be fine and that this was just a temporary slip," or whatever, I'll be happy to do that.

I DO care and I DO support you on your journey and I'm sorry if I "overstepped" and it hurt you. It won't happen again. I promise. :)

Amy, so sorry about my response and now I am unsure as to what you wanted to hear. The bottom line for me is that when I have my time of month I know that I am not going to lose weight. What happens to me and only me is that I gain weight and I become cranky and rather dangerous in my choices. Maybe this was a first deviation for you but frankly it is a common occurance for me. I just try to limit the damage and drink alot of water. So sorry I stepped on your toes.

 Melissa, I know that I am in perimenopause because my cycle is changing. It's alot lighter and sometimes I short cycle. Instead of 25 days I shift to 15 day intervals. The other problem I am experiencing is severe mood shifts. I never really experienced pms when I was younger but now I have strong emotional shifts. Last week I became so depressed I felt down right suicidal but I called a good friend of mine to talk it out. I've started keeping a journal to chart both the physical & mental aspects. Boy sometimes being a woman can be a real pain. Hope you are doing well. :)

Hi AmyMiami,

I wouldn't worry about what you JCC told you because I think she is wrong. You know your body and your eating habits better than anyone else. Realistically speaking, for you to have actually gained .4 lbs in weight you would have had to consume 1400 extra this week. If that wasn't the case then its TOM bloat.

There isn't really a lot you could do if you got your period the morning of your weigh-in, but here are a couple things I do if I have a weigh-in during my period: the day before I drink lots of water and raspberry leaf tea which really helps with cramps and water retention. I also stop eating a little earlier the night before so my stomach is more empty.

Good luck at next weeks weigh-in, I'm sure it will be a big drop!

Thanks Annie!

I hope its a big drop as well.

Normally, I also have a few tactics, like you if I have a WI during my TOM. Drink lots of water, go on an extra long walk, etc. But I guess what threw me off was that I actually got my period the morning of my WI! Totally threw me off!

Looking forward to the next WI for sure!

Thanks :)
