Hi all. I have two beagles I love dearly, (had three, but one died at age 12 in March ). Now, my two both have cancer. The oldest is 10 and has mammary cancer ( she is spayed ) and during spaying, they found my 3 year old beagle to have ovarian cancer ( extremely rare, vet says) Both of their prognosis is unknown...I want to get another dog, but I can't replace my beagles. I am thinking of another breed. I want a yellow lab or a German Shepard. Can anyone share which type of dog they have???? Also, all my dogs are female, never had a male. Am thinking of getting a male as they don't have all the problems female dogs seem to get. Only worry is, do males lift their legs on furniture?? Any suggestions would be great. This is a great forum. Thank you.

So sorry about your beagles. They are so stubborn and cute! I got my first puppy/canine EVER just a few months ago: a female orangey/brown English Cocker Spaniel (not American). I was not prepared for a puppy at all and even suffered a type of depression after owning her, she was so exhausting. Me and Ginger have a nice balance now. She rarely barks, is soooo sweet, loves people and my two cats. I am so glad she came into my life.

My cousin in TX (I'm in CT) just got a male German Sheppard after her Zoe died (she was also a GS). Zoe was her 2-year-old's best friend ever. My friend has a Datsun (spelling). Rather old and not much personality. I kow that Labs are very smart, easy to train but are BIG and like to sprint so they need lots of room to run off their energy (or they be depressed/at out). Supposedly Border Collies and Poodles are the smartest. I wish you luck and keep us posted! (IAMS has a self-help line for pet loss). Be well

:( Oh Cindy, I am so sorry to hear about your fur babies....they add such joy to our lives and I know you love them so much. It hurts to see them sick. ((((hugs))))

My little pooch is like one of our family members....he doesnt even know he is a dog, and doesnt even LIKE dogs. lol. He is a real character. He is a Pomeranian, 12 yrs old. We have had him since he was born. I dont really remember him ever hiking his leg on furniture, but I have heard my friends complain of such. I have seen him do that outside during walks.....I think he is marking his territory.

I'm not sure you would want a pom, they are very temperamental, spoiled, think they rule the roost....and he does! lol. Mine is such a lap dog...as my friends call him, a froo froo dog.....he even prisses when he walks.:P

Yes, keep us posted on how your babies are doing and what you decided to do.

This is my Simba baby  yes, he wears bows in his hair.....he doesnt know if he is male or female....maybe thats why he prisses, he's confused about his identity  :P :D

So sorry to hear about your "kids." It's like having a sick family member and my heart goes out to you. :(

Growing up I had a lot of dogs - both male and female - and they all had their own personalities and breeds - usually mutts.

We had a male German shepherd and he was very adventurous. He wasn't destructive - actually none of our dogs were - but they were trained not to be.

I had a Dalmation mix who was also male and very sweet. I had a purebred collie that we rescued from an abused home. She was VERY shy but also very much a "lady" and very polite. She also died of vaginal/anal cancer (even though she had been spayed).

My SIL had a black lab who was huge and funny but VERY gentle. I remember living with them for a few months when I was up in NY to take some acting classes and one day after returning from the City, I had a terrible migraine and Casey was such a goof and playful and LOUD and I was so worried about coming home and having him bark and carry on because I thought the noise would kill me.

But when I came home, instinctively he knew I wasn't feeling well and he gently pulled me into the guest room when I went to lay down. He spent the night just watching me, with his head on the bed. He never moved and he never made a sound. He wouldn't leave my side, even to go for his walk, until he knew I was better the next day. Remarkable dog.

Now we have cats because they are more independent and we figured if we were responsible enough to have a dog, we should also be able to have kids. LOL Anyway, they also had their own personalities and in those cases, it was the female cats who were more likely to get into trouble than the males. Some were standoffish. Others were very "human." They're all different, like people, and have their own quirks and personalities.

Whatever you decide to do and whenever you decide to do it, I'm sure they'll find a loving home with you. :)
