File this under NSV's or Things To Do Before I am 50: I was feeling all pumped up one day a few weeks ago, and entered a 5k. The annual "Turkey Trot" 5k run/walk in my city. I figured since it was advertised as a run/WALK, I was ok. My cardio endurance has continued to improve through my bootcamp workouts, however, I know I absolutely cannot run 3.1 miles. I don't even think I could run 1 mile. My knees were doubtful I could run a half mile. Regardless, I showed up (yes--I had my doubts even while driving there), I did run a little bit (ok more like a jog but faster than a walk), and finished ahead of some of the other 3000+ people in the event. My official time was 43:45. Will I do it again? Doubtful. I was in a good amount of pain for two days after. This was my fault; I was so thrilled to be DONE with the race that I neglected stretching thoroughly afterwards. Still, I recognize I am not a runner, nor do I strive to be one. What I did was face a challenge head on and came out the other side a WINNER! OK, actually I was in 2611th place out of 3075, but still a victory for me. Thank you for letting me share with you. PS: that's me--#1194 with a big smile!

HI,

I think you are AWESOME!

We had a Cranberry run up here, 4.5 miles that some guy in his 20s ran in less than 20 minutes. A young lady, age 21, won the women's division in 23 minutes and change. I did not have your courage. I am looking for a 5k or 10K that I can walk this next year. Since you had the courage, I am going to keep walking over the winter and will do one this next spring unless I find one over the winter.

PS I am going to be 50 in May, 2012. Guess I will have to get a move on.

Thank you so much! :D It did take a lot of courage for me to do this, and I know you can do it too! My advice: pick a BIG event that is well attended by all ages and definitely a run/WALK! And pay no attention to how long it takes you. Trust me when I say the big feeling of accomplishment comes just crossing the finish line. I will be 50 in July of 2013 -- sure is "funny" how things just aren't as easy to do anymore with age (not to mention added weight).

Thank you!!! :D You totally can do it! I think half of it was mental for me, just getting over the fear of failure or looking like a doofus (well, I do that on a regular basis anyway...lol).

That is so awesome - I'm totally impressed. My first 5K my time was around 46min - under 45 is great for someone jog/walking. I just did a 5K on Veteran's day after laying off for 2-1/2 years. I walked the whole thing and my time was 50:06. Here's a picture of me and my racing companions.

Way to go Susan!!! I love this and makes me even more determined to do this. My niece lives down in Atlanta and has promised she will do it with me when I am ready. She already does marathons so it will be easy for her.

Thanks, Savana. :) It's more annoying than it is anything else. At least now I can move around a little more but I just have to be careful not to make any quick moves or bend in the wrong direction. Sometimes it's just such a "rush" kind of like being on one of those crazy carnival rides. :P

Phyllis, Debbie, Melissa, Savana,

Thanks for the support. It was fun. I walked a 1/2 marathon in Sept 2008 - I was about 20 lbs lighter and it was pre-ankle injury (Sept 2009). I'm thinking of training for another one - Dave (#31 in the picture) is trying to talk me into it. He has run two marathons. Just in the thinking stage at this point...

BTW - this post helped me learn how to post a picture - I used a post Phyllis had posted before as a guide - thanks Phyllis.
