Hello everyone,

I just started the program a week ago and I'm already wondering about the breakfast part of the prepared meals. I'm a good cook and could make an egg scrambler, french toast or bake low fat muffins myself to replace a few of my less desirable food options.

Seeing as I have just started, is it advised to go off the food selection this early and start with my own meals or should I stick it out a little longer and just choose the food I like in the morning.

I don't want to get to far away from the portion size and calorie control.

Thoughts?

Thanks :)

People will tell you to stick with their food until you're half way but after a couple of weeks I quit the JC snacks & breakfast too. I just have cereal w/ milk & fruit, sometimes a Smart Ones breakfast. I weigh everything to the gram to make sure I'm not getting too much. I consistently lose every week (knock wood LOL)

I'm a little confused why you want to quit doing the breakfasts. Is it that you don't like the selection? You want to save money?

The reason I ask is that, yes, the closer you stay on the plan, ESPECIALLY in the beginning, the better it will be for you.

Going off plan THIS early (and no one is saying you have to wait until halfway to start swapping SOME things out), could be ill advised simply because you're not that familiar with the program and the meals yet.

You want to make things more appetizing? Fine, take a breakfast sandwich and add some FF cheese, salsa or guacamole to it. (Just make sure you balance out your fat and dairy to accommodate these changes.)

You wnt cereal? Fine, take a cup of any whole grain cereal that's about the same calories as a JC cereal and add fruit (try to stay away from high-sugar bananas) and some FF milk. I prefer FF half and half for richness.

Want to make yourself a scramble, fine, use two egg whites and add some veggies. If you use a whole egg, just use one.

My biggest concern is that because you're a good cook, you might be more tempted to "experiment" by adding things that you shouldn't.

Why don't you write out your recipes plans and bring them to your JCC to review? That way you'll know whether you're in the ballpark or have to tweak your plans to be closer to JC guidelines.

Let us know what you find out from your JCC. (BTW, if your JCC won't "let" you switch out your breakfasts, switch your JCC. And there's a difference between encouraging you to stay on JC and being pushy about it.)

Finally, again, I strongly urge you to stick with the JC breakfast for at least a few more weeks until you're COMPLETELY familiar with the plan.

And if you want/need to switch something out, switch out the snacks. Go with 100 calorie snacks that are cheaper. But for now, try to stay with the breakfast.

Just my two cents. :)

I wouldnt suggest subbing out this soon. I would recommend waiting a while longer before you try doing your own breakfast...or any meal really. You will get the best results by following the plan 100% this early in your program.

I find the JC cereal tastes boring and is very high in sugar. I have switched to an organic brand that has twice the fibre, half the sugar and tastes good enough I don't mind eating it in the morning two or three times a week.

I miss cooking breakfast, that's part of it to. I have replaced the meal bars with a Luna bar and find them much easier to get down/nutritionally equivalent and half the price.

I also find the snack bars are just glorified candy bars. It was my counsellors suggestion that I replace my meal bars with a snack bar and a glass of milk. I told her I had found some meal bars that I liked and she told me that the less food I purchased the less help I would get. Needless to say I requested a new counsellor.

So far, I have taken out the cereal and replaced it with my own, same with the meal bars. I was weighed on Monday and I have lost 6 lbs. Thank you to all that responded, I appreciate everyone's honesty.

Cheers :)

Well good for you on the weight loss and finding a substitute that was more appealing but still "on plan." But my biggest congrats comes from having the smarts to change your JCC when she said that "the less food you buy, the less help you'd get."

Geez, when I hear stuff like that I want to just scream!

That is sooooooo not the way Jenny is set up to be and I'm glad you made the change and I hope that you notified your center's director about why you were changing consultants AND that you also notified corporate.

They can't have people like that representing them. It hurts the whole program. :(

Keep up the great work! With your smarts and determination, I know you're going to do well. :)

You bet I went and talked to the program director. It wasn't just that comment that made me mad, she forgot all my snacks when I purchased food so I had to go back the next day to pick them up.

Thank you for all your words of encouragement, it means a lot :)

Cheers
