The nutrition facts on my Red Vine Twists says:

Total Fat 0g
Sat. Fat. 0g
Trans Fat 0g
Sodium 20mg
Carbs 34g
Sugars 16g
Protein 1 g
Calories 140

This is for one serving - or 4 pieces. I haven't learned all the stuff you need to know for being on your own yet - so I thought I would ask a few of you guys who have been here for awhile.

Should I not be eating this at all, or because it's fat free would it be considered a free food?
If I do eat it, should I limit it to one serving (4 pieces)?

I can do this!!!

It's not the fat free content, it is the calorie and sugar content that matters too. I'm sure others know far more than I do, but I would make it a once in a while treat and skip the jenny dessert the day you eat it.

I'm pretty sure it's definitely not a free food unless it has 0 calories. A limited free should have no more than 35 calories, so not sure how many calories are in the serving, but I think red vines have more than 35 because of the sugar. You should post on the 'Ask the Dietitian' board and they'll tell you what to count it as.

Kelly,

Unless you get the sugar free, you can be in "danger."

Anyway, this is the perfect question for ASK THE DIETICIAN. I'm sure she'll say "yay" or "nay" and be sure to ask if and when you can (if it's okay) to eat these.

Personally red licorice is something that I have to avoid because I could never limit myself to "just one serving." :o

If i am doing the calculations correctly, i think it will be considered as 2 starches. Wonder what the dietician will say.

 Kelly,

One serving of red licorice translates into 7 teaspoons of sugar. Do you think that it is the healthy thing to do? Eating sugar? Fat free doesn't mean calorie free and often it means added sugar. In order to make the food appealing the manufacturer removes the fat and adds sugar. The only thing sugar does is give you a temporary energy boost and then you crash. There is no redeeming nutritional value from eating red licorice  Be smart eat the Jenny Craig snack because at least their snacks do have some fiber. Don't be fooled by the fat free label look at the entire nutritional package. Good luck on your weight loss journey :)

I eat red licorice all the time for my snack. I particularly like the logs, 140 calories each. I eat it instead of a Jenny snack. My JCC said the purpose of the snack is not nutritive but to make you feel that you are not deprived and can have your favorite foods, so the licorice fits that well.

It has no more sugar than any other 140 calorie fat-free snack.

Well good for you for showing some incredible restraint! :) Personally, when it comes to red licorice, I don't have that same willpower. :(
