i am close to my goal weight and i need advice on how to deal with people especially at work. Everyone on my team has a jar of candy on there desks and people go around grazing all day. Our boss has a stash of goodies for us all because i suggested healthier options. it started off as fruits and nuts and healthy foods but now, it is stuffed with cookies and chips and everything else in between. Then the management will order in food for everyone at LEAST once a week (non of it healthy). To give you an example just this week alone...we got greasy sandwiches, chips & cookies, the next day, it was chinese, and the day after that was pizza, and the next day they passed out popsicles as an afternoon snack. Now today they asked us to all bring in food next week for a "snack" potluck. i think they mean well and they think they are building team morale but we sit on our ***** all day long and they are making us fat!!! i gained 35 lbs the 1st year working here. We work long hours so we are forced to leave at 9pm and eat out. The girl next to me was a runner when she started and i can tell she has gained at least 20 lbs over the past 4 months. A girl just came up to me and asked me if she made turkey meatballs for the snack potluck if i would eat them. I told her no and she got offended. JC- i need help with suggesting other ideas for this office. keeping in mind, that no one really likes to leave their desks for longer than 20 minutes for anything. also, i am constantly getting the dirty look because i decline everything.

thanks!

One strategy you could try is this "Not just yet" strategy. The 100 Days of Weight Loss Success book by Linda Spangle, she recommends this instead of saying "No" because it gives the offerer the feeling that you'll get some later, then they forget and you stay on plan.

For your snack day, you could bring veggies or fruit to give you something that you know you can eat.

Well, it's nice that your company cares enough about their employees to make sure that they eat. Of course, the choices are not great (what fast food is?) but at least they are being thoughtful. I've worked in places where they didn't care if you took your lunch or dinner break or not (and we weren't allowed to eat at desks) when we were on a deadline and that's equally disastrous.

The thing you have to remember is that no one is forcing you or anyone else to eat what's brought in. We may "complain" to ourselves about what's being offered but we often still eat the wrong things in those situations when we know better. :(

I'm sure by now everyone realizes that you've been losing weight and must know you're on some sort of diet. So if you respectfully turn it down (or, as was suggested, simply say, "I'll get something later,") and eat your JC meal, then you'll be fine.

As for snacks, keep a drawer full of JC snacks for yourself so that you're not tempted to eat what's there. (BTW, as healthy as nuts are, I found out the hard way that eating too many will put on the pounds and, in fact, it was too many almonds that had me return to JC because I put on 10 lbs! So that's not especially healthy in the long run.)

I have a food dehydrator and often use that to make snacks from fruit or veggies. You have to be careful with the fruit though because when they are just thin, dry slices, you tend to eat more than you should. But since it concentrates the sugar of the fruit, it usually works for me when I'm having a "sugar attack." But you also can find dehydrated fruits in the supermarkets too. Just CAREFULLY follow the portion sizes.

And for your snack contribution, by all means, feel free to bring in fruit or baby carrots or other healthy options for you and everyone else.

Sometimes you gotta just say "no" and stick to it. They'll get tired of insisting after a while.

Hang in there. You've come half way and you WILL get to your goal if you ignore the pressure and temptation.
