OK. I am scared. I am nervous. I've made a decision.....

Tomorrow, I am pulling out the bike.

I am going to get on it.

I am going to ride it.

I hope I don't KILL myself!!!!

I'm not 50 yet, but I'm 43 and 100# overweight. If I can ride my bike, you can too! Go for it!

I am still alive!! I only rode about 1 mile because I quickly decided that I need an "old lady" bike.

No mountain bikes
No 21 speeds
no skinny seat

Nope... OLD LADY....
Big Friggen wide seat
High handle bars
Pedals NOT right under my feet where I can't see em
Basket to hold all my stuff
OLD LADY bike

Any suggestions?

ONLY a mile? Thats it, ONE mile??? What are you talking about lady....that is AWESOME!!!!.... a mile would literally lay me out. lol <bow to the queen> I am impressed, esspecially for your first ride.

We bought my daughter the neatest bike from Walmart.....big comfy seat, sturdy, large stand up handle bars.....really cute! She loves it. She calls it her beach bike.

Hi! I am 58 years old and up to 8 miles on steep hilly roads (california). I am trying to work myself up to join the biking clubs. I see them everyday riding all over the peninsula. They look awesome. I see a lot of 60-70 year old men riding. They are in great shape. And I always see them in Starbucks or some muffin shop eating huge muffins and drinking coffee after their rides! That's what I want! Any way, I am trying to add a little longer ride each time I go out. I would like to be able to do 30 miles easily. If you keep at it, you can do it.

I'm 57 with alot of weight to lose and I went and bought a Schwinn from Kmart....I love it. It is black with pink trim and white pinstrips! I have started out slowly and I can tell I am getting stronger at it. (Knee/back issues). I am slowly increasing my distance but I do get tired of the same circuit here. It's too risky to go elsewhere due to alot of traffic. I have neighbours who sit outside and cheer me on when I go by! LOL.

I'm 54 and 3 years ago I started taking spinning classes - you have to stick it out for a while before you actually ENJOY them - but, I got on my bike this summer and it was a breeze compared to the class - once the weather turns, you may want to try spinning indoors, so you don't lose your momentum!

Sounds like I am in good company!!! biggrin.gif

I am 58 years old as well!! I have a lot of hip pain due to osteoporosis so I think this will be easier on the old hips than even walking. Plus, I will get out in nature. I LOVE nature walks!! So, it will be good for the soul as well!!

I am going to go look at a 2 year old Schwinn cruiser that a friend is willing to sell me for $75 on Sunday. If it is similar enough to the Trek my friend has, I think that will be better than the crappy little mountain bike I tried on Wednesday. The mountain bike is my daughters bike, so it is not a lost cause. She says that when I find another bike, she will go with me now that it is out of the basement and inflated!! YAY!!!

If I find that I am enjoying riding (and I think I will!!), I MAY look into getting a nice Trek next year.

I am serious about getting this weight gone and the best way to do that is to ramp up the exercise and of course follow the JC plan!!

That looks nice!! I go to look at it tomorrow. Yesterday I went and bought me a pretty pink and black helmet. You know I have to be stylin even while on a bike and the Schwinn is bubble gum pink so I should be good.

Bad news and good news....

Bad news first -- I didn't get the bubble gum pink bike. It just didn't fit me.

Good news -- I've been bike shopping and I am definitely now better in the know about what kind of bike I want. I am looking at either an Electra Townie, a Trek Pure Lowstep or a Trek Calypso, all 7 speed. All of these have what is called a foot forward design where you can actually have both feet on the ground when stopped and the pedal position is about 8 inches more forward than in other bikes.

Now I just have to find one!!! It is now the end of the "model year" for bike companies and most everyone around Columbus is out of stock on all but the ugly colors. I still gotta have pretty colors.

The search is on!! Any hints or recommendations, pass them on!

I purchased a Fuji. It has a really comfortable seat and has the foot forward design and pedal position features that you described above. It is a one speed cruiser, with petal brakes. I love mine. It is turquise and cream and is a really comfortable ride !!

I found it!!!

Electra Townie. 7 speeds. Fushia with lime green rims.

I added white fenders, a basket, a gel seat, rear view mirror and a trip odometer.
