Hi,

These step challenges have been so motivating for me that I decided to step it up a notch. As some of you know I'm training for a half marathon on Oct....I'm hoping that if that goes well I can do the Vancouver marathon in May:)

I'm going to attempt to run 500 miles between June 11 and Sept 30th.

The rules....

There really aren't any:) I'm only going to count miles where I'm actually training for my marathon (I'm going to be using the Garmin 305 Forerunner that I got myself as a reward at 30 lbs to track distance...hee hee)...but you can all track the miles however you want.

I have 4 of my FaceBook friends tha are going to join me...I'd love it if some of my JC friends did too!

We'll start this Saturday (June 11th). Just send me your mileage totals every week and I'll track and post the results every Sunday starting June June 19th.

Can't wait to run with everyone!!!

Cheers,
Ang.

sounds great. I have 3 half marathons this fall, Sept, Oct & Nov. Looking for one for December. There is one December 5, but too close after November 20.

Where is your half marathon in October? Two of mine are in Arkansas, one in Oklahoma.

I'm in - this will keep me focused on our Iditarod challenge smile.gif

I'm hoping I can get back into running soon - I've done a couple of 5k's and completed a half-marathon in 2009, got an injury, piled on the weight and hung up my running shoes! Perhaps this is just the motivation I need to dust them off smile.gif

Good luck in your training and have fun with your Garmin (it was my absolute favorite running gadget lol)

Cool!! Hopefully we get more takes before Saturday:)

Tammy, I'm running the Silver Comet half on Oct 29th in Atlanta.
After I complete that one I'll see if I can't get another couple more in before my goal of doing the Vancouver marathon in May!!

I've always wanted to do Disney too!
It's at the beginning of Jan....do you think I could be ready for a full marathon by Jan if I'm just completing a half-marathon by Oct?

hummm....maybe I should adjust my training schedule and target the full marathon at Disney...using the Silver Comet as a training run.

Ang - I have a 1/2 marathon on October 29 too. It's in Conway Arkansas.

I want to walk/jog a full marathon sometime next year. I need to build up mileage to do that, so I don't think it will be in the spring. It's too hard to that many miles on a treadmill and it's dark out when I could walk during the week and cold on the weekends! I'm a wimp. So I'm think a late spring, maybe May or I'll have to wait for the fall.

I'm trying to talk my husband into it also. If he doesn't do it, I'll be calling him a wimp forever!!

I love my Garmin 305 too. It's a fun gadget.

I'm interested! Will this count towards both the ididarad and the 7 peaks?

Hi 777,

Yes, it can count towards both.

We're starting today ladies...and of course, this is a rest day for me (LOL). Went 5 miles on Thurs and 4 miles on Fri...going to be at the dojang either teaching or training for 5+ hrs today so I don't think a run would be wise:)

Going to try and do a 6 mile run tomorrow though.

Please remember to send me your mileage for the week next Sat and I'll post the results of our first week on Sunday.

Cheers!

All in Ang..... They have half marathons at Disney then they have Goofy's challenge which is a half and a full. Would you go to WDW or Disneyland? I will get serious about training maybe we could do it together!?

Excited for this challenge. Off to a bad start but will pick up the pace starting tomorrow. Thank you!

Hey Francine,
Yes, I'm serious about the Disney marathon...I think it would be awesome!
Let's see how my half goes in Oct..then I'll have a good gauge as to whether I'll be ready in January. At least living in the south, running outside all year really isn't an issue:)

Sorry about that Benten777...my bad;)

So I started today with a little over 6. Going to try and get 5 in tomorrow before I go to work:)

Cheers!

I'm so impressed by all of the running and marathons on here!

I'm not ignoring this challenge, however I don't have anyway at this time to easily calculate the miles that I walk, and I'm not even really jogging yet. I'd love to do a 5K but I just don't know how to ramp up and learn to jog/run properly. Plus I don't have a buddy to do any of this with, which would really help I think but alas, I don't know anyone in my area that could help teach me to run properly and train for it.

So I'm going to stick to tracking steps for now. The Iditarod Challenge will begin July 1st!!!

One mile is roughly 2000 steps.

Leslie,

My plan is to track my steps as we have been doing for the 7 Summits Challenge and at the end of the week divide that weekly total by 2000 that should give me an approximate mileage for the full week smile.gif

2 years ago I completed a half-marathon and trained for a full (however did not complete it because I was diagnosed with pneumonia 2 days before race day - training in a Newfoundland spring is pretty much like training in monsoon season lol), but the point is I did it all by myself. I found there was less pressure in having to keep pace with someone and I could do my own thing. I bought a book called "Running Start to Finish", by John Stanton, the man who started the Running Room chain of running stores in Canada (and I believe in the United States). The book has EVERYTHING you need to know about running: form, shoes, stretches, exercises, training programs, how to prep for a 10K's, half's and full and there is a particular chapter directed to women runners. I love the book and while I was training it was my running bible. You can buy it from the Running Room website, under the shop section, then in the book store, here's the link: http://www.shop.runningroom.com/

Also if you don't want the book the Running Room also develops running programs that you can do with their staff if you have a Running Room in your area or you can do a web clinic, here's the link for that: http://www.events.runningroom.com/hm2/

They have web clinics for learning to run, as well as completing your first 5k - plus half and full marathons if you get bit by the running bug smile.gif

Hope you found this helpful smile.gif

Hey everyone,

Sorry to be MIA...really busy week and trying to get those training runs in has been challenging!!:)
There have been several questions as to what counts towards the 500 miles...my answer is that each of you can make that decision for yourselves. The point of this challenge is for everyone to push the envelop...but those limits are different for everyone.

Personally, I'm only counting my training runs/walks.....and not my normal steps throughout the day. But if someone wants to count their total steps and divide by 2000 to get miles, I think that's perfectly valid:)

I look forward to getting everyone's numbers on Saturday!!!!

Cheers,
Ang.

I am at 20 miles today.

I've decided to start training to do a full marathon next year. My long walks will be on Sunday, tomorrow I'm going to do 9 miles.
