I am in a very similar boat (although it looks like you are much more dedicated to the gym - good for you! I'm sure it will pay off).
I am technically a returning customer and I can promise you it does work! The first time was in 2001 and I was in grad school in NYC, eating way too much take out and to make things worse my husband (then new boyfriend) was living in Miami so long distance was torture. I gained weight (although I was always slightly overweight) and decided to join JC. I lost a ton of weight (I don't remember how much) and never even went to the gym! All the walking in the city did the job for me.
I was so happy with the loss but not focused on my goal and just kind of dropped out of the program when my husband moved to NYC months later.
I slowly started putting on the weight, year after year and needed to lose a ton after our first baby was born in 2007. So I rejoined but got pregnant with our second just a month into the program. So, here I am now. Finally rejoining 2 years after our second girl was born and now I need to lose 70 (or more)...we'll see how I feel when I get to 145.
My DH says he's so proud of my dedication and focus this time around. I have been reading blogs, ordering books, downloading workout apps. Everything! And sticking to the program 100%. My mind is really set on doing it this time. I'm so sick of wearing either gym clothes or jersey dresses that stretch, stretch, stretch. Ugh, I must look like a sausage in some of these!
Anyway, sorry I have gone on and on but my main point for writing is that after all that dedication, I only lost 2 pounds my first week. I was a bit disappointed because I figured a large loss would push my motivation and keep me on track. Surprisingly I was able to bounce back with the help of these boards and my DH. I stayed on track yesterday (day of the weigh in) and went for my first training session on the C25K workout.
I'm sure many more folks will be able to give us advice on metabolism and so forth but the little I know is that the program will work and your hard work will pay off!
Oh and the one tip I read on another thread (and may be worth discussing with your JCC), has to do with calorie intake. Apparently this member (sorry I can't remember her name!), tries to jump start her metabolism by having different calorie intakes per day. For example, she might stick with the 1200 calorie for 5 days out of the week and then randomly eat 1300 or 1400 for 2 days out of the week. She says these extra 200 calories helps your body "wake up" and realize there is more to burn. Again, I thought it sounded super interesting but may be to early for us newbies to try out.
So I hope my post helped. I look forward to keeping in touch! It's great to see someone who is on a similar track.
Take care!

Do not get discouraged. I have been on JC since late Oct 2010. Weight loss takes time and the small increments you loose will pay off. I be the first time you get measured you will be shocked at how may inches you have lost. Don't get caught up in the pounds you may be loosing but the physical signs of your clothes getting looser. JC does work. I have lost 20 lbs and 26 " so far and I have to loose 95 lbs to get to my goal.
