Hi! I had a tumor on my thyroid, so they removed half of my thyroid in February. Ever since that time I have been gaining weight. My Dr. said my levels are normal ... but none-the-less, I can't pinpoint it to anything else.

So, I decided to give Jenny Craig a try. I am on week 3 now and go in for my weigh-in tomorrow.

I've learned that women in their 40s should ALL get their thyroid's checked. Apparently, this is pretty common in our age group (joy).

Just curious ... anyone else with similar issues? Any advice?

I also have a thyroid issue......Hypo thyroid, my levels are low, so I take meds for it. It started 20+ yrs ago when I was diagnoised w/hyperthyroidism. I had the Radioactive Iodine and that made me Hypo. About the test, did they do a total TSH panel on you? Sometimes levels will not be accurate, and have cycles they go through. You have to be tested during that cycle, but the TSH test and total panel tands to be more accurate.

I have been very successful on JC. I have lost 43 lbs. The loss is slower than it used to be, but I think that is pretty normal w/thyroid problems. So be rest assured this is totally doable.

It is so true that alot of ppl have thyroid issues and they dont even know it. It is really common, 80% of women have thyroid problems and most are not even aware of it.......says my Endo.

Thanks Melissa ... this is really encouraging. Congrats to you, by the way! Your pictures are amazing. I weighed in yesterday and lost more pounds ... which puts me at about 10 in total. 30 more to go! Thanks for your post and encouragement!!

I have had Thyroid issues since my daughter was born (over 16 yrs). I have Hypothyroidism, a benign nodule on my gland and antibodies for Hasimoto's Disease (spelling?), which is a auto immune problem with my thyroid and someday , no telling when but it will eventually stop working all together. So I will have to keep it in check and look out for signs , like fatigue, constipation and weight gain so the Endocrinologist can adjust my Sythroid medication.

Thanks everyone ... this has been really helpful. I went back to my doctor ... and he changed my dosage and also switched manufacturers. I am now on a different dosage of Synthroid and it seems to be better. Your posts were helpful!

I can only take brand name Synthroid. My dr said the generic isnt equivalent and wasnt bringing my levels up like it should. Soon as I started taking the name brand synthroid my levels finally balanced.

Hi!
I am new to JC! I had thyroid cancer 10 years ago and once my thyroid was removed I had radioactive iodine therapy as well. Long story short...I am now on SYNTHROID .175 mg and life is good. I have had my meds adjusted a few times (increased) and once it leveled off, everything worked fine. Iwill say that what was KEY was the BRAND. My insurance switched me to the generic and for a few months I was a wreck until we figured out that generic is NOT the same. So, if anyone tells you it is, they are LYING!!! At least that is what my body told me. Good luck and I hope to post a weight loss. I am only on day 4!! I am starving!!!!

I agree 100%.....my dosage was changed so many times until my doc changed me to brand name.....it really is true, they are not equivalent.

Hi,
Keep on top of your levels. I have had Hasimoto's since my early twenties. I am 42 now. I feel best when my THS is closer to 1. When my levels are at 3 I have all the classic symptoms. It was hard to convince my doctors that I needed to up my meds. I agree name brand is the best. I went to generic to save money and for the first time I had difficulties controling my numbers. The weight will come off but slower than most folks. Watch your soy protein and soy consumption because they can interfer with synthroids effectiveness.

I have always had my thyroid checked because of the sleep studies I've entered, so far it's been normal. But an excellent point to have it checked!!

Hi Vinomommy,

I just has my thyroid removed in December. It was malignant and I also did the radioactive iodine. The prognosis is good for me and I"m currently on 112 mcg of Synthroid. I go tomorrow to have my blood drawn to see if my levels are where they should be. The doctor increased it from 100 to 112 3 weeks ago. Anyway, I wanted to try JC before I noticed too much of a weight gain. I'm on day 2. I'm not really hungry but craving my old foods. I wish you much success with the plan.

I just found out tonight from one of my cousins that thyroid problems run in our family. Why noone ever told me this before now is beyond me. Now I am debating on whether to go get my thryoid checked. I don't even know what symptoms to look for. I guess I will spend the evening Googling this. She told me if I ever have dental xrays or mammograms done to ask for the neck guard. Apparently thyroid cancer runs in our family along with a long list of other thyroid problems. Ughhhhh!

Hey Laura, a simple blood test will tell ya if you have a thyroid disorder.....just a little stick.

It really depends on the thyroid issue as to what your symptoms will be. If you are HYPOthyroid, you may feel lethargic, no energy, weight gain, depressed, slurred speech and slow to think at times, cold alot.....esspecially in hands and feet, dry skin and hair falling out.

HYPERthyroid has a whole different set of symptoms: nervous, fidgety, hot alot of the times, weight loss, heart palpitations, anxious, easily agitated and shakey hands.....

These are just a few off the top of my head. I had hyperthyroid then after I had tx I plunged to hypo.

If you are the least little concerned, I would go and get a test.....either way, the disorder is easily managed most of the time.

Hi, I'm so glad to see others with hypothyroid on this forum. I was diagnosed with it almost 6 years ago, though I wouldn't doubt I've had problems all my life. I have a great doctor now and she makes sure my levels are good. But weight loss is so hard with it!
Today is day one for me on Jenny, for the 2nd time.
I'm jumping all the way in this time. I actually have a close friend on it and she pushed me to join with her. I think support is a huge part of this!
Good luck!

Annie

:) Hi Annie! You are so right....support is key to successful weight loss. Just merely chatting with those that are the same journey as yourself helps BIGtime!!! So come here often, we have some great folks here who are willing to buddy up with you.

Now about thyroid issues.....not gonna lie, it is tough!...but totally do-able. It took me extra long just to lose 62 lbs, but you CAN DO IT!!! You have to stay focused, dedicated and most of all DETERMINED to do this.

Let me know if I can be of any help....pm me anytime :)

Hi Annie - I started JC about 8 weeks ago. I'm hypo with Hashis and trying get my levels stable. Dr. Still playing with my meds.

I will tell you that although it's been slow I've lost about a lb a week. Frustrating for mecat times but at least scale is going in right direction!

The weeks I've had the biggest losses are also the weeks where I've exercised 4-5 times that week. So for me I have to exercise to be more successful.

Anyway it can be done!

Just a little FYI and reminder.....I know I have said it before, but it is SO important to get your levels checked every so often once you have lost as little as 10 lbs....my Endo said even a small amount of weight loss almost always throws a wrench in our levels and has to be adjusted.

I have the same thing... I have never met anyone else with it. I spiral out of control in Hashitixicosis crisis. My Endo refuses to medicate me, which makes my life a living **** :( I need a new endo, can you see if your endo can recommend a endo in San Diego, CA? Thanks!
