Today is the start of National Yoga month so I'm going to try to do a dvd or go to a class every day this month. This will get tricky over the weekend when we're in a hotel for a family wedding but I plan to bring some dvds.

Anyone else up for the challenge?

Jenn

Hi Jenn,

I realized I have yoga in my Wiifit, so count me in, I'm just starting this, but my next month will be very physical with work and trainning for the half marathon so this my be helpful to keep me up right. Not to mention calmer, it's also a high stress month for me too. So count me in. How do you want to do this? Thanks for starting this. Hope you had a great time this weekend.

Nancy

With arthritis knocking at my door, they would have to pry me apart from doing some of those moves!! laugh.gif I wonder if there are modified yoga programs for those of us who might not be as flexible as we would wish to be?

Joan,

Wiifit has a modified version, they tell you what to do if you can't reach. That's what I do since I have arthritis too. Yoga is really good for your arthritis, take it gradually. Plus with Wiifit you can pick what you want to do. So if your having a hard time you can start with the areas that are easier. The other thing I get are massages and energy work.

There are so many different kinds of yoga and now there are so many yoga hybrids that it can get really confusing.

For someone who is naturally tight (aka most men) or has arthritis or asthma or is pregnant, etc. you can start out really slow. I have seen a lot of men in my Bikram classes (the hot yoga) and I would imagine it's because the heat REALLY helps to loosen the muscles. Hatha yoga is the one everyone thinks of when you think of yoga- and the enjoyment of the class is 100% dependent upon the instructor. I have had instructors that think it's a flippin' competition (which is the antithesis of everything that is yoga) and I've had instructors who are afraid to challenge people. It's one of those things that you have to try to find the one that you like (sort of like dating!)

Personally I prefer kundalini yoga but I have friends who HATE the breathing exercises and the mantras that you do. I like Bikram because it's a fantastic workout. I hate hatha because I find it boring but that's the one my mother prefers.

The best way to experiment is if you have FitTV or Netflix, just check out different shows or rent different DVDs. There are specific ones for different physical issues, too.
